01 · Decide: phone-run or button-run?
The Hatch runs entirely from an app, and its full sound library is a paid membership. The Philips, Lumie, JALL, and hOmeLabs all work from buttons on the device with nothing to subscribe to. If you'd rather not add another monthly fee or keep your phone by the bed, lean button-run.
02 · Match the light to your room
A bright dome like the Philips fills a shared bedroom and can wake one person without blasting the other. A slim clock like the hOmeLabs or JALL tucks onto a nightstand that barely fits a glass of water. Measure your space before you fall for the biggest model.
03 · Look at the sunrise range
A longer, adjustable fade wakes you more gently. A fixed 30 minutes is plenty for most people, but if you're a light sleeper, the Lumie's 15-to-90-minute range lets you dial in a slower, softer dawn.
04 · Watch for the subscription trap
Only the Hatch charges to unlock its full sound and meditation library; the rest are one-and-done buys. Bonus for apartment living: a clock that also plays white noise helps cover thin-wall and hallway noise, so you may not need a separate sound machine.
